Sample preparation	To 250 mg of the powdered herbal drug add 4 mL of a mixture of 20 volumes of water and 80 volumes of methanol. Sonicate for 10 min and filter. Wash the residue with 2 quantities, each of 2 mL, of methanol. Combine the solutions and dilute to 20 mL with methanol

Sample preparation	Sonicate 0.25 g of (finely) powdered Goldenseal root and rhizome in 4 mL of 80% methanol for 30 min. Withdraw the supernatant, and wash the residue twice with 2-mL aliquots of methanol. Combine the supernatant and rinse liquids in a 20-mL volumetric flask, and adjust with methanol to volume. Mix well and filter before use
