HPTLC Workshop West Coast
The first workshop at the western coast of the U.S organized by the HPTLC Association-North America Chapter since its creation in 2019 was concluded on May 21st-22nd. At this time Alkemist Labs located in Orange County, California, hosted and supported this educational initiative. The interim president James Kababick and the secretary general Wilmer Perera led the theoretical and practical discussions about HPTLC. Our special invited speaker Sidney Sudberg, founder and current CSO of Alkemist Labs, shared his multi-year experience on HPTLC with attendees.
The workshop began with three core lectures covering fundamental HPTLC concepts, key parameters, and the unique features of modern planar chromatography. These were followed by sessions on advanced HPTLC applications for identity and quantitative analysis, and concluded with a lecture on method development strategies and validation processes for HPTLC methods. James Kababick and Wilmer Perera delivered the lectures, while Sidney Sudberg contributed a presentation focused on the challenges of qualitative botanical analysis.
A substantial portion of the workshop was dedicated to hands-on training, highlighting the importance of standardized parameters for reproducible HPTLC results. The concept of comprehensive HPTLC methods was also revisited, illustrating how a single fingerprint can serve multiple purposes: confirming identity, detecting adulterants, and quantifying specific chemical markers.
One of the key practical highlights was the differentiation of mushroom species using both conventional data interpretation and advanced clustering algorithms. A distinctive chemical marker was quantified through densitometric analysis, demonstrating the applicability of HPTLC for potency testing in the dietary supplements industry.
